I read from a "post-modern" thinkers blog today about his thoughts regarding a certain controversial TV sitcom. He made a comment to the effect that while the show may have little moral value, "at least it’s real" and expressed how much he liked to watch it every week. I wonder if, in our emerging church culture, have we begun to embrace things that promote immorality simply because "at least they’re real"?
In dealing with young adults and college students I see the trend to question church. I think that is a great idea. The church culture in the US is light years behind the culture we are immersed in everyday, but as we question church, I think we have to be careful to walk softly across the moral ground that has been laid by generations before us.
Jesus seems to have always embraced the "real" people around Him. He wasn’t afraid of their dirtiness or sin. He loved them and cared for their needs. That is the kind of church community I want to be a part of, one that embraces the "real world" and seeks to meet the needs of those who cannot help themselves. But embracing real people and embracing "entertainment" just because it is real are two different things.
How does the effect you and I? In my opinion Jesus definitely would have embraced the people in that TV show I mentioned earlier, but would He have sat down to watch their confused lives play out on TV for entertainment? I’m not so sure.
