Crazy Day

December 6, 2005 — Leave a comment

Today I’m spending a lot of time working on computers-it’s part of the job.  I read a great book last night called Blue Like Jazz.  It’s written in a different sort of way, so when you pick it up, come with an open mind.  I read last night how the author and some friends were going to college at a major party school.  They decided, on one of the biggest party weekends of the year to set up a confessional booth in the middle of campus–but here’s the catch–they were going to confess the sins of Christians when people came into the booth, now listen to their confessions…  I thought that was a great idea.  I think sometimes we forget what a negative stereotype people have about the church and Christians.  Even though the small group that built the booth had not personally hurt a lot of people, participated in the Crusades or any ethnic cleanings in the name of God, they realized that they could be a part of the healing process for those that had formed ideas about Christians because of those who had done those evil things.  The lesson for us can be to remember that no matter how we are trying to represent Jesus, there are a lot of people who have misrepresented Him, and we are stuck with the consequences.  So instead of passing the buck and pretending like it doesn’t effect us, we can take responsibility for what some of done in the name of Christianity, and try to live a life that points people to the true heart of Jesus.

I pray for all of us who are learning how to be in the world but not of the world, that we would not be satisfied to be associated with Christianity, but live a life that would portray Jesus Himself.  Much Love.

Just wanted you to know that President Dan from Life Pacific is coming to speak at the Avenue this Thursday Night.  Come by and be a part if your schedule allows.  I’m sure it will be an informative and interesting night.

Levi Back at Home

For those who have been keeping up on the Cobler family you’ll be happy to hear that Levi is home safe and healthy.  It appears that he was not getting enough calories which is why he had only gained about 2 pounds in the first 4 months of his life.  He is now gaining weight and looking good.  Thank you for all your prayers and calls.  We are grateful to God for taking care of our family!

at least it's real

I read from a "post-modern" thinkers blog today about his thoughts regarding a certain controversial TV sitcom.  He made  a comment to the effect that while the show may have little moral value, "at least it’s real" and expressed how much he liked to watch it every week.  I wonder if, in our emerging church culture, have we begun to embrace things that promote immorality simply because "at least they’re real"?

In dealing with young adults and college students I see the trend to question church.  I think that is a great idea.  The church culture in the US is light years behind the culture we are immersed in everyday, but as we question church, I think we have to be careful to walk softly across the moral ground that has been laid by generations before us.

Jesus seems to have always embraced the "real" people around Him.  He wasn’t afraid of their dirtiness or sin.  He loved them and cared for their needs.  That is the kind of church community I want to be a part of, one that embraces the "real world" and seeks to meet the needs of those who cannot help themselves.  But embracing real people and embracing "entertainment" just because it is real are two different things.

How does the effect you and I?  In my opinion Jesus definitely would have embraced the people in that TV show I mentioned earlier, but would He have sat down to watch their confused lives play out on TV for entertainment?  I’m not so sure.
